Dr. Michael Cordas, 1941 - 2021

Michael Cordas, Jr., DO, 79, of Steelton, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021. He was born in Harrisburg on November 11, 1941, son of the late Michael, Sr. and Stella Cordas. Michael was a graduate of Steelton-Highspire High School, Susquehanna University, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a founding father of sports medicine, associated with Penn State Sports, Susquehanna University Sports, and various high schools in Central PA. Michael was an avid gun collector, political enthusiast, car enthusiast, and lover of all animals.He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Cheryl Cordas of Harrisburg; one son, Michael T. Cordas of Harrisburg; and one brother Thomas Cordas of Colorado. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday September 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm in St. Nicholas Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 601 South Harrisburg St., Oberlin with the Rev. Christopher Rocknage, officiating. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the church. Burial will be in Churchville Cemetery, Oberlin. Arrangements by Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Oberlin. "Michael will be on a football field every Friday Night in Heaven." In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Susquehanna University Athletic Department in care of Steve Briggs, 514 University Ave, Selinsgrove PA 17870.

Dr. Keith Peterson February 28, 1933- September 30, 2018

Dr. Peterson was one of the founding members of AOASM, and was the third president, serving in 1978. He was instrumental in the creation of the Sports Medicine Certificate of Added Qualifications, and worked diligently to create a strong foundation for AOASM.

An Excerpt from Dr. Peterson's obituary in the Missoulian:

"[Dr. Keith Peterson] met Marilyn Shope in 1953, both students at the University of Montana. They married in 1958 and moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where Keith was attending Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following his internship in Dallas, Texas, they moved to Seattle, where they established The Sports Medicine Clinic in Ballard, the largest privately owned clinic for sports injuries in the United States, providing medical care to athletes at Seattle Pacific University, and over 20 high schools throughout the northwest region. He also established the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Camp in Seeley Lake, Montana, the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine, the International Council of Motorsport Sciences, and Rodeo Sports Medicine. In addition, he served as the medical director of the Unlimited Hydroplane Commission, was the assistant team physician for the Seattle Mariners, and the attending physician for the Pro Rodeo Circuit, in four states. His love of sport had him volunteering as an associate physician for all of Seattle’s professional sports teams, including the Supersonics, the Seahawks, and the Sounders as well.

Keith was a pioneer in sports medicine and a constant fixture on the sideline, gym, rodeo arena, and in the Hydro pits. He opened his life and his heart to all who needed a hand, a lift, a wrap, an ice bag, conversation, a story or just a smile. His presence amongst those who loved and knew him will be greatly missed, and his family was the anchor of his life."
